Free Pre-school

The Expert Advisory Group on the Early Years Strategy recommend that a free part-time place in the Early Childhood Care & Education (ECCE) be available from every child’s third birthday until they enter primary school.  The Expert Group recognised that this would mean that the period of time a child would spend in free pre-school would vary depending on both the child’s birthday and the age at which they start primary school.

ECCE

The ECCE is a 2year scheme designed to give children access to appropriate programme-based activities in the 2 years before they start Primary School. Participation in a pre-school programme provides children with their first formal experience of early learning, the starting-point of their educational and social development outside the home. Children who avail of pre-school are more likely to be ready for school and a formal learning and social environment.  The scheme will raise standards in that services will implement the National Framework for Early Childhood Learning with both the Siolta and Aistear curriculums being delivered.  Both the Siolta and Aistear are the National Frameworks for Early Learning which supports services for children from birth to 6years.
